Use Cases
The EDT Research Program will publicly provide and maintain a comprehensive (and living) catalog of use cases focused on the engineering of digital twins. This catalog will showcase real-world applications, methodologies, and best practices developed across research and industry collaborations. By sharing these examples, the program aims to support innovation, guide practitioners in designing and deploying digital twins, and foster a broader community of knowledge around advanced digital twin engineering.

Domain: health
Care Process Digital Twin
Mines Saint-Étienne
Digital twin of the multistep hospital care pathway - from admission to rehabilitation - combined with the working process of medical and paramedical resources. Surgery, emergency and cancer treatment are the main use cases, aiming to simulate and optimise the organisation of care and staff.
Domain: industrial-engineering
Fischertechnik Demonstrator - Digital Twins for Manufacturing Systems
IRISA / RWTH Aachen / ISW Stuttgart / Univ. Regensburg (MBDO project)
Research demonstrator for the engineering of digital twins of manufacturing production systems, based on a modular Fischertechnik line (high-bay storage, handling, transport, processing, sorting). A shared reference architecture - gateway, synchronizer, DT engine, data and model managers, services - is instantiated for three complementary operational scenarios: energy monitoring, flexible replanning and predictive maintenance. This demonstrator serves as a comparison platform for evaluating digital twin engineering approaches.
Domain: energy
eco4impact
Vectura System
SaaS digital twin platform for predictive decarbonisation of road transport fleets (ICE, BEV, FCEV), covering strategic planning 2030-2050 and tactical/daily planning via Digital Truck Twins, scenario generation and economic/CO₂ models.
Domain: maritime
EcoBoatTwin
Vectura System
SaaS digital twin platform for energy optimisation and decarbonisation of working vessels (trawlers, service vessels, pushers, barges), integrating high-fidelity multi-physics models calibrated on real measurements, scenario-based simulations and economic/CO₂ models.
Domain: industrial-engineering
Fluidic loop
CETIM
Digital twin of a closed, instrumented hydraulic loop equipped with a pump, a heat exchanger, and various regulation components.
Domain: energy
KOPR SmartGrid DigitalTwin
DataThings S.A.
Digital twin of the electricity distribution grid, providing decision support for network operators: maintenance planning, fault detection, simulation of extensions and reconfigurations. It acquires real-time data from smart meters and field sensors (4G, LoRa), as well as the physical composition of the network (cables, transformers...). Machine learning and AI models predict the future state of the network, in particular consumption at delivery points and solar and wind production based on weather data. What-if simulations assess the impact of scenarios via power-flow calculations. The system also provides real-time alerts and visualisations to help reconfigure the grid and manage renewable generation, particularly to smooth voltage fluctuations.
